This research funding award supports the translational project "Disease monitoring by liquid biopsies in genetically complex soft tissue sarcomas" in the field of tumor research with a total of 16,000 euros.

Dr. David Stahl, Assistant Physician at the Clinic I for Internal Medicine and currently working as Physician Scientist in the research group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Roland Ullrich, Clinic I for Internal Medicine and CMMC, has been awarded the Research Promotion Prize 2022 of the German Sarcoma Foundation. This research funding award supports the translational project "Disease monitoring by liquid biopsies in genetically complex soft tissue sarcomas" in the field of tumor research with a total of 16,000 euros.

"We are pleased that this award will support our liquid biopsy project in patients with soft tissue sarcomas," said Dr. Stahl. Liquid biopsy ("liquid biopsy") involves examining, among other things, cell-free DNA released by tumor cells into body fluids, such as blood. "The aim of our project is to describe the genetic diversity of soft tissue sarcomas by analyzing cell-free DNA from patients' blood samples in cooperation with the research group of Prof. Dr. Peter Borchmann and local pathology, and thus to be able to better monitor the course of the disease and therapy in the future," says Dr. Stahl.

"We are particularly pleased that representatives of the patient community were also involved in the selection of the award winners. This shows the clinical relevance of this project. We therefore hope that the results can find clinical application in order to improve the diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of patients with soft tissue sarcomas," Dr. Stahl continued.

The Research Promotion Prize of the German Sarcoma Foundation was awarded for the first time this year to support project proposals in the field of sarcoma research.
