Prof. Cursiefen Receives Bjerrum Medal - Honor from the Danish Ophthalmological Society
director of the Center for Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Cologne and Executive Board Member at the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC). Established in 1965, this award recognizes ophthalmologists worldwide for their outstanding contributions to the field and is accompanied by an honorary lecture. Prof. Cursiefen is the first German recipient in 30 years.
The president of the DOS, Professor Anders Ivarsen of Aarhus, praised Professor Cursiefen's achievements in combating blindness through various corneal transplantation methods. He made special mention of Cursiefen's innovative approach to anti-lymphangiogenic preconditioning of high-risk eyes through pre-transplant UVA cross-linking treatment. The Cologne Eye Institute is leading a multicenter study on this topic funded by the former BMBF (today: BMFTR) in Germany. These approaches are also being investigated in the clinic's SFB1607 project.
With over 1,200 operations performed annually, the Center for Ophthalmology is the largest corneal transplantation center in Germany.
