Biomedical and Disease-Oriented Life Science PhD Education
Doctoral candidates performing molecular and disease-oriented life science research in one of the research groups at the CMMC or the associated institutions are enrolled in either in the Graduate School for Biological Sciences (GSfBS) at the Science Faculty or in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program Molecular Medicine (IPMM).
The IPMM is a jointed venture of the Medical and the Science Faculty and is aiming at life scientists and research-oriented physicians. The IPMM was also one of the first programs in Germany to offer structured complementary training to physicians comparable to an MD-PhD. These two long established graduate schools both provide high-level structured training programs covering disciplines ranging from molecular medicine, human diseases, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, genetics, including microbial, animal model organisms and having an integrated curriculum aimed at producing the next generation of leaders in the field of molecular medicine whether in academia or the wider market.
The Umbrella Function of the GSfBS and the IPMM
Together the GSfBS and the IPMM are representing an umbrella structure for all externally funded and cross-faculty graduate schools and programs. These programs are usually focused on one specific area of research, doctoral students are offered, in addition to the above mentioned training, workshops directly related to their focus of research as demonstrated by the Gradute School of Ageing Research, the Research Training Groups (RTGs) as well as the integrated Research Training Groups (iRTG) of the Collaborative Research Center (CRCs) at the University of Cologne.
