May 2022

Dr. Alexander Simonis

was able to raise 1.8 milliome euros for infection research from the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. The BMBF supports the career path of qualified young scientists in infection research, as the increase in infections with multi-resistant bacteria poses a major challenge to patient care.

The junior research group of Dr. Simonis focuses on the development of new antibody-based immunotherapies to more effectively treat severe bacterial infections. The basis for the grant is results obtained in collaboration with Dr. Dr. Jan Rybniker, Clinic I for Internal Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Florian Klein, Institute of Virology, at the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC). The preliminary work was further made possible by the support of Dr. Simonis by the Cologne Clinician Scientist Program (CCSP), which intensively promotes the career of young clinician scientists at the Cologne site.

Prof. Dr. Christian Frezza

from the University of Cambridge (UK) received his certificate for the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at the award ceremony in Berlin, where the winners from the years 2020 to 2022 received their award.

Professor Dr. Christian Frezza is Principal Investigator at the CECAD Research Center. As part of his professorship for "Metabolomics and Aging", he is investigating how aging affects nutrient processing e.g. in cancer cells, with the aim to develop novel therapeutic strategies to reverse, or prevent these changes.

Dr. Henning Grüll and Dr. Dr. Philipp Schommers

are being honored for their outstanding research on the human immune response to viral infectious agents. The Award of the Industrie-Club Düsseldorf in cooperation with the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences is endowed with 20,000 euros.

Dr. Henning Grüll is Assistent physician at the Institute of Virology headed by Prof. Dr. Florian Klein. Dr. Dr. Philipp Schommers is Assistant physician at the Clinic I for Internal Medicine headed by Prof. Dr. Michael Hallek.

assoc. RG 10 - Antibody-mediated therapy and prevention of infectious pathogens

Prof. Dr. Maria Leptin

the director of the European Research Council (ERC) is among the outstanding scientists who have become fellows and foreign members of the Royal Society - the world's oldest academic association. The Royal Society thus recognizes the Cologne professor's leadership role in European science.

Maria Leptin is a German biologist and immunologist. She leads research groups at the Institute of Genetics at the University of Cologne and at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg.

April 2022

Prof. Dr. Christiane Bruns

was invited as an outstanding personality of the international surgical society to give a lecture and exchange ideas with surgical colleagues in New York as part of the "Corinne and Maurice (Hank) Greenberg International Visiting Professor" program of the New York-Presbyterian Hospitals of Weill Cornell Medicine University.
