4th Cologne Symposium on Ageing Medicine - January 25, 2020

The first baby boomers are 70 years old and the proportion of older people will rise dramatically in the next few years. In addition, life expectancy has been steadily increasing since 1840 and will continue to rise until 2040. This situation represents an enormous challenge for our health care systems due to the number of multimorbid patients with or at risk of disability and high resource use. In order to better cope with this challenge, the University Hospital of Cologne recently established a new Ward for Ageing Medicine („Universitäre Altersmedizin“) within the Department of Internal Medicine II. The goal is to offer patient-centered, goal-oriented, value-based medical care through an  integrated multidisciplinary co-management of medical specialists.  Such an interdisciplinary team can be composed of geriatricians, general practitioners, nurses, case management, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists and pharmacists among other healthcare professionals.

The Department of Internal Medicine II would like to present these and other developments in  Ageing Medicine at the 4th Symposium, organized in cooperation with the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMMC), the Cluster of Excellence in Aging Research (CECAD) and the Department of Cardiology of the University Hospital of Cologne. Experts from the disciplines of Geriatrics, Nephrology, Cardiology, Transplantation Medicine, Psychiatry, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation will be giving their insights and latest data on chances and challenges of medical progress in advanced age.

This year we will also have the honor to meet Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen M. Bauer, Professor of Geriatrics at the University of Heidelberg. His keynote lecture will focus on his field of expertise, sarcopenia and frailty, as well as on the interaction between malnutrition, multimorbidity and functionality in advanced age.

The language of the Symposium is German.

The 2020 edition of the symposium has been organized by the Departments of Internal Medicine II and III of the University Hospital of Cologne in collaboration with the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), Univ. of Cologne and CECAD - the Cluster of Excellence, Univ. of Cologne and Stiftung der Cellitinnen e.V.

We are looking forward to welcoming you.
