CMMC Summer Edition Event: Scientific Exchange, Tribute, and Community
The CMMC Summer Edition brought together outstanding scientific exchange, the recognition of long-standing commitment, and personal interaction in a memorable evening moderated by Professor Claus Cursiefen.
The scientific program featured a keynote lecture by Professor Markus Stoffel (Institute of Molecular Health Sciences, ETH Zurich), whose research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin secretion, and metabolic homeostasis.
In his lecture, "Mechanisms of Diabetes and Emerging RNA Therapeutics: Two Examples from Research and Translation",Professor Stoffel provided fascinating insights into current research on pancreatic beta cells, the liver, adipose tissue, and the hypothalamus, demonstrating how fundamental molecular discoveries can pave the way for innovative RNA-based therapeutic approaches. His presentation stimulated lively discussion among the audience and highlighted the importance of translational research in molecular medicine.
A special highlight of the evening was the tribute to Professor Thomas Benzing, who has served as Chair of the CMMC Executive Board since 2011. On behalf of the Executive Board and the CMMC members, Professor Claus Cursiefen expressed sincere gratitude for Professor Benzing’s approximately 15 years of dedicated leadership, scientific ambition, strategic vision, and exceptional reliability. Having decided not to stand for re-election, Professor Benzing leaves behind a lasting legacy that has profoundly shaped the development of the CMMC.
As both a clinician and a scientist, Professor Benzing has consistently championed the integration of clinical questions with molecular basic research - an approach that reflects the core mission of the CMMC. Under his leadership, the center sharpened its scientific profile, embraced emerging research fields and innovative methodologies, strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration across faculties, and provided sustained support for early-career researchers. These achievements have significantly contributed to establishing the CMMC as a vibrant, innovative, and internationally visible center for molecular medicine at the University of Cologne (Read more about the CMMC election 2026 here).
The evening also carried a special historical significance. Professor Markus Stoffel’s visit to Cologne created a meaningful link to the origins of the CMMC: his father, Professor Wilhelm Stoffel, was one of the founding figures of the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne and among the leading biochemists of the postwar era. Coinciding with the first anniversary of Professor Wilhelm Stoffel’s passing, the event offered a fitting opportunity to reflect on the CMMC’s scientific heritage while celebrating its continued development under Professor Benzing’s leadership.
The official program concluded with the traditional CMMC Get-Together on the CMMC terrace, where guests enjoyed a barbecue and finger food in a relaxed atmosphere. Members of CMMC NEW GENE also contributed to the evening’s program, making the Summer Edition not only an occasion for scientific exchange and recognition, but also for strengthening the CMMC community.
