The Filatov Institute of Ophthalmology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine awards the Filatov Memorial Medal biennially in honor of Professor Dr. Vladimir Filatov, a renowned ophthalmologist and one of the foremost pioneers in corneal transplantation and corneal banking. The prestigious Filatov Memorial Medal is conferred by the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. In addition to receiving the medal, the awardee is invited to deliver the opening lecture the at the conference. This FILATOV MEMORIAL lecture serves as a central feature of the conference, celebrating the enduring legacy of Academician Vladimir Filatov.

Professor Dr. Claus Cursiefen, Director of the Center for Ophthalmology at University Hospital Cologne and Principal Investigator at the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC) at the University of Cologne, was honored as the fourth recipient of the Filatov Memorial Medal. He was recognized for his groundbreaking work in advancing minimally invasive corneal transplantation. During the opening ceremony of the 2024 Filatov Memorial Lectures Conference, Professor Cursiefen delivered the Filatov Memorial Lecture, titled “New Developments in High-Risk Corneal Transplantation.”

The Cologne Center of Ophthalmology is the largest center for corneal transplant surgery in Germany. There has been a close clinical and scientific exchange with the Eye Clinic of the Filatov Institute for many years.
