Speaker: Session 2 - Carbohydrate Metabolism and Diabetes
Professor Roy Taylor is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and founder of the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre, where he pioneered the application of advanced imaging techniques to metabolic research.
His work focuses on the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms underlying disease development and remission. Prof. Taylor has been instrumental in establishing that type 2 diabetes is driven by excess fat accumulation in the liver and pancreas, leading to insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. This concept, formalized in the Twin Cycle Hypothesis, provided a mechanistic framework for understanding disease progression.
Building on these insights, his research demonstrated that type 2 diabetes can be reversed through substantial weight loss, with reduction of liver and pancreatic fat restoring normal metabolic function. Through landmark clinical studies, including the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), his work has shown that sustained remission is achievable in a substantial proportion of patients and has directly influenced clinical practice and national treatment programs.
By integrating mechanistic insight with clinical application, Professor Taylor´s research has transformed the understanding and management of type 2 diabetes and established remission as a realistic therapeutic goal.
