Speaker: Session 4 - Lipid and Fatty Acid Metabolism
Professor Gregory R Steinberg is Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Metabolism and Obesity and the J. Bruce Duncan Chair in Metabolic Diseases. He is also Co-Director of the Centre for Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetes Research, leading a multidisciplinary program focused on the molecular regulation of metabolic health.
His research focuses on the molecular pathways controlling energy metabolism, particularly how cells regulate the utilization and storage of lipids and glucose in response to hormones, nutrition, and exercise. A central theme of his work is the role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and related signaling networks in coordinating metabolic homeostasis and linking energy sensing to whole-body physiology.
He has made seminal contributions to understanding how metabolic signaling pathways influence disease, including demonstrating how AMPK and downstream targets regulate lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and mitochondrial function. His work has also uncovered mechanisms by which hormones such as serotonin and factors like GDF15 modulate energy balance, thermogenesis, and glucose control, providing key insights into obesity, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease.
By integrating in vivo physiology with molecular and biochemical approaches, his research has advanced the understanding of how exercise, diet, and pharmacological interventions improve metabolic health. This translational perspective has helped identify new therapeutic strategies for cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Professor Steinberg has received numerous national and international awards, including the CIHR Gold Leaf Prize and the American Diabetes Association Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award, reflecting the global recognition of his contributions to metabolism research and their impact on human health.
