Keynote Speaker / External Scientific Organizer: CMMC Lecture III
Professor Gerald Shulman is the George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Physiology at Yale. He is also an Investigator Emeritus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Co-Director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center. He is a leading investigator in the field of metabolic disease and human physiology.
His research focuses on the mechanisms of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, using advanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with stable isotope methodologies to study metabolism in vivo. Prof. Shulman has been instrumental in demonstrating that ectopic lipid accumulation in liver and skeletal muscle is a primary driver of insulin resistance. These paradigm-shifting findings have defined key molecular pathways linking lipid metabolism to glucose homeostasis and have fundamentally advanced the understanding of metabolic disease.
By integrating mechanistic studies with clinical investigation, his work has contributed to the development of therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic dysfunction and has had a major impact on the field of diabetes research.
Professor Shulman has received numerous prestigious international awards, including the Banting Medal for Lifetime Scientific Achievement (American Diabetes Association), the Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research, and the EASD–Lilly Centennial Prize.
