Keynote Speaker / External Scientific Organizer: CMMC Lecture II

Professor Axel Roers is Professor and Chair of Immunology and Director of the Institute of Immunology at Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany. A physician-scientist trained in dermatology and immunology, he has held leading academic positions in Cologne, Dresden, and Heidelberg, where he now leads one of the largest immunology institutes in Germany.

His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing immune responses in health and disease, with particular emphasis on innate immune sensing, nucleic acid–driven immunity, and the regulation of inflammatory and allergic processes. His work has advanced understanding of how the immune system detects endogenous and exogenous nucleic acids and how dysregulation of these pathways contributes to chronic inflammation and autoimmunity.

A central contribution of Professor Roers research has been the elucidation of mechanisms controlling immune cell function and dynamics in vivo, particularly within complex tissue environments. Through the development of innovative experimental approaches, his work has provided fundamental insight into how immune cell populations are regulated under physiological conditions and how their dysregulation drives pathological immune responses.

By integrating experimental immunology with clinically relevant questions, his research bridges fundamental mechanisms of immune activation with translational applications in autoimmunity, oncology, and infectious diseases. His studies have yielded important mechanistic insight into the regulation of immune processes in health and their disruption in disease.

Professor Roers has also coordinated major collaborative research initiatives, including DFG-funded programs on type 2 immunity and nucleic acid immunity, underscoring the international recognition and impact of his contributions to modern immunology.
