Speaker: Session 4 -   Nucleic Acid Metabolism

Professor Ana Martin-Villalba is a Group Leader at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg, Germany, where she investigates the molecular mechanisms linking stem cell biology, tissue regeneration, and cancer.

Her research focuses on the regulation of stem cell function and tumor progression, with particular emphasis on how injury-induced signals drive the acquisition of stem-like properties. Prof. Martin-Villalba has been instrumental in identifying signaling pathways that control cell fate decisions in neural and cancer contexts and in demonstrating how tumor cells hijack regenerative programs to support growth and survival.

Her work has identified signaling pathways that control cell fate decisions in neural and cancer contexts and has shown how tumor cells exploit regenerative programs. She has also investigated how niche-derived and metabolic signals influence stem cell behavior and tumor growth. Her research integrates stem cell biology, cancer progression, and regeneration, providing mechanistic insight into how these processes are coordinated in both physiological and pathological conditions. Her work contributes to understanding how regenerative and oncogenic processes intersect at the molecular level.

Professor Martin-Villalba has received multiple prestigious national and international awards, including an ERC Consolidator and Synergy Grants.
