Speaker: Session 1  -  Regeneration and Metabolism

Professor Ahmed I. Mahmoud is Associate Professor at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, La Jolla, USA. He is a leading investigator in the field of cardiovascular regeneration, with a particular focus on the molecular and metabolic mechanisms that enable heart repair.

Ahmed I Mahmoud studies the molecular mechanisms regulating cardiac development and regeneration, with a focus on cardiomyocyte proliferation and tissue repair.

His work has defined the transient regenerative capacity of the neonatal mammalian heart and identified key transcriptional and neural regulators of cardiomyocyte cell-cycle activity. His research further investigates how metabolic state and sarcomere organization influence cardiomyocyte cell-cycle re-entry in the adult heart. Recent studies from his laboratory demonstrate that metabolic reprogramming can promote cardiomyocyte proliferation, reduce fibrosis, and improve cardiac function following injury.

Using molecular, genetic, and translational approaches, his research has demonstrated that metabolic reprogramming can promote cardiomyocyte proliferation, reduce fibrosis, and improve cardiac function following injury. These studies provide fundamental insight into how regenerative capacity is controlled in the mammalian heart and inform emerging strategies for cardiac repair.

Professor Mahmoud has received multiple national and international awards for his contributions to cardiovascular research, including the American Heart Association Career Development Award and the WARF Innovation Award.
