Speaker: Session 1 - Regeneration and Metabolism
Dr. Almudena Chaves Pérez is a postdoctoral researcher in the Cancer Biology and Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, USA, where she conducts research in the laboratory of Scott W. Lowe. Trained in biotechnology and molecular biosciences in Madrid, she has developed a strong background in cancer biology, stem cell biology, and metabolic regulation.
Her research focuses on how cellular metabolism governs cell fate decisions in tissue regeneration and cancer. In particular, she investigates how metabolic rewiring influences stem cell identity, differentiation, and communication within the tissue microenvironment, with a strong emphasis on intestinal biology and tumorigenesis.
Her work investigates how metabolic reprogramming supports tumor progression and modulates anti-tumor immunity. Using molecular and systems-level approaches, she examines how central carbon metabolism influence immune cell activity and cancer cell behavior under metabolic stress.
Her research contributes to defining how metabolic constraints shape immune responses and tumor development. By integrating cancer biology and immunometabolism, her work aims to identify mechanisms that can be targeted to exploit metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer.
Dr. Chaves Pérez has received competitive distinctions for her work, including the 2025 Kravis WISE fellowship and the Dr. Eddie Méndez Scholar Award, reflecting recognition of her contributions as an emerging leader in cancer metabolism research.
