Speaker: Session 2 - Carbohydrate Metabolism and Diabetes
Professor Jens C Brüning is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research and Professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Preventive Medicine at the University Hospital Cologne, Germany. He is a leading investigator in the field of neuroendocrine regulation of metabolism.
His research focuses on the central control of energy homeostasis and glucose metabolism, with particular emphasis on how neuronal circuits integrate hormonal and nutrient signals to regulate systemic physiology. Prof. Brüning has been instrumental in establishing the central nervous system as a key regulator of metabolism, particularly through pioneering work on insulin and leptin signaling pathways in the hypothalamus. Using advanced genetic models, his studies have identified molecular mechanisms linking neuronal signaling to peripheral metabolic processes, including hepatic glucose production and insulin sensitivity.
His work has fundamentally reshaped the understanding of metabolic disease by demonstrating how dysregulation of neuroendocrine pathways contributes to obesity and type 2 diabetes, and by uncovering central mechanisms that coordinate whole-body metabolism.
Professor Brüning has received numerous prestigious national and international awards, including the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG), and is an elected member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
