Speaker: Session 3 - Redox Metabolism and Regeneration

Professor Ruma Banerjee is Vincent Massey Collegiate Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, USA, and an internationally recognized expert in enzymology and metabolic biochemistry. Her research focuses on the chemical biology of sulfur metabolism and vitamin B12–dependent processes, with particular emphasis on hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) signaling, redox regulation, and the enzymatic pathways that maintain metabolic homeostasis in mammalian systems.

Her work has elucidated fundamental mechanisms of cobalamin metabolism and has been instrumental in establishing hydrogen sulfide as a key metabolic signaling molecule linking redox biology, mitochondrial function, and cellular stress responses. Combining biochemical and structural approaches, her research investigates how sulfur-containing metabolites regulate enzyme activity and metabolic pathways, providing mechanistic insight into the integration of metabolic networks and redox regulation at the cellular level.

These discoveries have broad implications for understanding metabolic disorders, neurodegeneration, and diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Professor Banerjee has received numerous prestigious honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Merck Award of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
