August at outdoor swimming pool locations for KölnBäder GmbH is all about UV protection. At the start of the outdoor pool season, UV-Index Boards were installed at the outdoor swimming pool locations to inform visitors about the current UV index and the protective measures to take.

Now, the infotainment tour UV-Schutz im Freibad – Mach den Sonnencheck” is kicking off at KölnBäder’s outdoor pools.

Learning to Protect Yourself from the UV Radiation of the Sun
Together with the team of the project DIE SONNE UND WIR, our campaign aims to raise awareness among children, teenagers, and families about proper protection against harmful UV radiation — through interactive info booths, hands-on activities, and practical tips for enjoying the summer time safely,” explains Judith Jussenhofen, spokesperson for KölnBäder.

The tour’s stations are run by the Cologne-based skin cancer prevention project DIE SONNE UND WIR. The project is organized by the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (University of Cologne) and the Department of Dermatology (University Hospital Cologne). It partners with the nationwide CLEVER IN SONNE UND SCHATTEN campaign of German Cancer Aid and works closely with the Cologne Health Department as part of the city’s heat action plan.

“Too much UV exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, and every sunburn – especially in children – should be avoided,” emphasizes Professor Dr. Cindy Franklin, Head of the Skin Tumor Center at the Department for Dermatology, University Hospital Cologne.

“Summer is the perfect time to remind families — especially those with children — how important sun protection is,” says Dr. Debora Grosskopf-Kroiher, Head of the DIE SONNE UND WIR project. “With the UV-Schutz Tour, we bring a fun and hands-on program right to where people are enjoying their free time. I’m excited to introduce our Cologne team: Milena Klinkhammer, Lusia Birlin, Ylva Morren, Nicole Warmer, Rebekka Hönnerscheid, and Dorothea. We are looking forward to welcoming children and adults to our stations on the UV-Schutz Freibad tour.”

Interactive Activities for All Ages:
For children, UV protection is presented playfully under the motto “UV Protection for Anna and Max” – for example, through experiments with UV beads, the sun terrace game, or designing UV caps and UV-protection yoyos at the creative table. Teenagers and adults can enjoy a free sunglasses check, demonstrations of the protective effects of different textiles, and comprehensive information materials about UV protection.
