Prof. Bruns will once again receive the Senate seat for Clinical Medicine II. She is Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for General, Visceral, Tumor and Transplant Surgery at the University Hospital of Cologne. She is also a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

The Senate is the central scientific body that advises and decides on all matters of major importance to the DFG, insofar as these are not reserved for the Joint Committee as the DFG's central decision-making body. The Senate has a total of 39 members; they are also the scientific members of the Joint Committee. The DFG Senate is responsible for all key research funding decisions in the run-up to the actual funding decision as well as for all key decisions on the organization of the review, evaluation and decision-making process. The Senate also decides which review boards are to be formed and how they are to be structured.
