… and Executive Board Member at the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), for his achievements in the field of corneal transplant surgery and transplant immunology. Laudator Dr. Peter Hoffmann (Castrop-Rauxel) praised Professor Cursiefen as a “leading expert in the field of corneal research and surgery”. Through his work, Professor Cursiefen has helped shape German ophthalmology on an international level. "Under his leadership, the University Eye Hospital Cologne became the largest center for corneal transplants in Europe," Hoffmann continued.

Significant parts of the award-winning work were also researched in the context of the DFG research group 2240 and the SFB 1607 at the Center for Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Cologne (www.crc1607.de). After the CRC 539 in Erlangen for research into glaucoma (1997-2009), the current CRC 1607 is only the second ophthalmologic CRC in the history of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
