Clinical Infectious Diseases Successfully Recertified as DGI Center - Review Recognizes Outstanding Performance

In their evaluation, the DGI experts commended the section’s outstanding performance and recommended recertification without reservation.
The reviewers particularly highlighted the section’s well-structured clinical care, strong scientific activities, excellent quality of medical training, and close interdisciplinary collaboration. This collaborative approach has been further strengthened since 2022 through the establishment of the Center for Infectious Diseases (CIM) at University Hospital Cologne.
“This recertification is a wonderful recognition of the tremendous dedication of all our colleagues. Every day, the entire team brings exceptional expertise and commitment to providing the best possible care for our patients, educating medical students, and training the next generation of physicians. As a university hospital, we are also involved in national and international research projects and collaborations aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases - and, ideally, preventing them altogether. We are proud to continue advancing all of these activities as a DGI Center,” says Prof. Dr. Dr. Jan Rybniker, Head of the Clinical Infectious Diseases Section and Principle Investigator at the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC).
Across its various clinical services, the section’s specialists provide care for several thousand patients with complex infectious diseases each year. Its activities include specialized outpatient clinics as well as an infectious diseases consultation service available throughout University Hospital Cologne. The section’s Clinical Trial Unit Infectious Diseases conducts numerous clinical studies across a broad range of infectious diseases. Patients with severe and highly contagious infections receive interdisciplinary care in the hospital’s specialized isolation unit.
The renewed certification underscores the high level of clinical expertise, scientific excellence, and interdisciplinary strength of infectious diseases at University Hospital Cologne.
