BMFTR funds Advanced Cologne Clinician Scientist Program (AdCCSP)

25/02/2026

Focus on progress in age-related diseases / The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR) is providing a total of €11.8 million over 10 years to fund a program focused on age-related diseases for clinically active specialists with research ambitions at the Faculty of Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Esther von Stebut

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Esther von Stebut, Vice Dean for Science & Transfer at the Faculty of Medicine and Director of Dermatology and Venereology at the University Hospital of Cologne, excellent specialists on the path to scientific independence can apply for structured funding opportunities in the Advanced Cologne Clinician Scientist Program (AdCCSP – Advances in Aging-Associated Diseases). The fellows are embedded in the core profile area of “Age-Associated Diseases” at the University of Cologne and are thus firmly integrated into the research profiles of the university and the Faculty of Medicine.

The AdCCSP program will support a total of 12 clinical scientists, who are to be recruited within the first four years. The fellows will receive a total of €135,000 per year for three years for 50% protected research time as well as additional personnel and mat.erial resources. A successful interim evaluation after 2.5 years will enable continuation within the program for a further three years. In the second half of the program, additional protected research time of up to a maximum of 75% will be offered through faculty funds to support the supervision of additional third-party-funded group members. Through the establishment and implementation of transparent processes and organizational structures, the implementation of individual curricula, continuous quality control, and measures for equal opportunity and work-life balance, fellows will receive optimal support on their path to scientific independence. If successful, a permanent position as senior physician with an adjunct professorship is possible. The first call for applications is planned for mid-2026.

Over the past ten years, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne has systematically developed the Cologne Clinician Scientist Program (CCSP) to provide structured support to physicians who wish to gain international visibility in research and healthcare. The program supports research-oriented physicians at various stages of their careers, from their studies to their completed specialist training.

The fellows follow a structured curriculum that not only promotes their (sub)specialization, but also advances their scientific progress and independence, and enables their integration into academic structures and networks. The aim of the AdCCSP program is to offer clinically active scientists attractive career prospects up to professorship.
