In the year 50 A.D. the wife of the Emperor Claudius was born on the banks of the Rhine and elevated her "Colonia" to the status of a city. Today, traces of the Romans are still to be found at every turn in Cologne.

The building plan for the Gothic Cathedral was drawn up by master mason Gerhard of Reil, who modelled the new church on the cathedrals of Paris, Strasbourg and Amiens. The cornerstone of the Gothic Cathedral was laid by Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15, 1248. However, construction ceased in the 16th century, due to a lack of funds and a general disinterest in Gothic architecture. Building work was suspended for almost 300 years.

The Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne was built from 1907 to 1911. It consisted of three adjacent truss arch bridges, each with three arches.
Lanxess Arena (originally Kölnarena, German for Cologne Arena) is an indoor arena, in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is known as the 18,500-capacity home of the Kölner Haie. The arena opened in 1998 and can accommodate 20,000 people for concerts. With its capacity of 18,500, it is the largest ice hockey arena outside North America.

Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in Germany. More than 10,000 animals are at home here. This makes it one of the most diverse in all of Europe. Its motto is: "Enthusiastic about animals". Among the main attractions is the elephant park, which opened in 2004. It is the largest north of the Alps. Equally spectacular is the Hippodom, completed in 2010 to mark the zoo's 150th anniversary.
Colonius in Cologne is the highest television tower in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Completed in 1981 on Cologne's Inner Kanalstrasse, it is the seventh-highest television tower in the entire country. The TV tower has become an indispensable part of the Cologne skyline. Unfortunately, the Colonius is not open to the public.
Hans Imhoff, a passionate maker of chocolates, had a long held dream: a chocolate museum with a fountain of unending streams of chocolate. On 31 October 1993, after a 13-month construction period, the Chocolate Museum was opened. It became a triumph of German museum history that nobody thought possible. With around 600,000 visitors a year, it is the most frequented cultural institution in Cologne.
The Rheinauhafen district is a young, attractive district with a variety of attractions. The newly designed, restructured Rheinauhafen waterfront complex is a young and attractive district of Cologne. The 210,000 m² development, which is located right on the Rhine, not far from to the city center, has quickly become established as one of Cologne’s popular attractions. The waterfront district features a mix of modern residential and office buildings interspersed with many cafés, restaurants, and galleries. And visitors with a passion for architecture and culture will also find points of interest in the Rheinauhafen.

Scientists explore problems of great societal relevance in three research focus areas: "Tumor biology, infection and immunity", "Homeostatic principles in metabolism and tissue regeneration" and "Neuromodulation".
