Speaker: Session 2  -  Carbohydrate Metabolism and Diabetes

Professor Michael Roden is Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and CEO of the German Diabetes Center (DDZ), where he leads research on metabolic diseases and their clinical translation.

His work focuses on the pathophysiology of insulin resistance, heterogeneity of diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Prof. Roden has been instrumental in demonstrating that ectopic lipid accumulation in liver and skeletal muscle is a key driver of insulin resistance in humans. Using advanced metabolic phenotyping approaches, his research enables the in vivo quantification of glucose, lipid and mitochondrial metabolism.

By integrating mechanistic studies with clinical investigation, his work has provided important insights into the development and progression of MASLD and has contributed to the identification of targets for prevention and therapeutic intervention. More recently, his working is addressing cardiometabolism, which will be also in the focus of the new CARDDIAB Research Center at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.

Professor Roden has received numerous national and international awards for his contributions to diabetes and metabolism research and plays a leading role in large-scale translational research initiatives in Europe.
