Programm

The 2nd Cologne Symposium on Ageing Medicine, took place on January 20th, 2018 and highlighted the potential of interdisciplinarity and multidimensionality in ageing medicine with the ultimate scope of defining new perspectives in the management and care of older individuals.

Demographics of the ageing population in Germany mirror the trends of increasing global life expectancy. In Germany, life expectancy at birth reaches almost 81 years and is associated with important medical and socioeconomic challenges. These may be kept under control through prevention and structured care of multimorbididity in older patients.

Also this year, the following departments of the University Hospital Cologne teamed up to convey expertise on ageing organ medicine and its geriatric manifestations: Dept. of Internal Medicine I - Prof. Dr. Michael Hallek - Dept. of Internal Medicine II - Prof. Dr. Thomas Benzing - Dept. of Internal Medicine III - Prof. Dr. Stephan Baldus.

During the 2nd Cologne Symposium for Ageing Medicine highly challenging aspects of geriatric care have been discussed by experts in the field and will include intensive care, emergency medicine and cardiovascular disease management of older adults.

Geriatricians and health care professionals from all over Germany got together to participate to a lively exchange about three fundamental topics of Ageing Medicine:

  • the management of older persons in emergency conditions
  • intensive care and heart failure.

Each topic has been addressed from an internal medicine point of view and from a purely geriatric point of view, each presented by experts of the field. The discussion on the debates were also moderated by specialists in the fields with a high level of experience in internal medicine and ageing medicine.

The debates have been introduced by a keynote lecture by Professor Finbarr Martin, emeritus consulting geriatrician at NHS Trust and Professor of Medical Gerontology at King’s College London, former non-executive director of NICE, past president of the British Geriatrics Society and current President of the European Geriatric Medicine Society. The keynote lecture aimed at updating the audience on age-attuning health services for older people in the UK and constituted a stimulating source of questions and ideas for the symposium  participants.
