The vision is our most important sensory function. Good vision is essential for independence in old age, but it is impaired by a variety of age-related diseases associated with aging, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Innovative research approaches and new therapeutic options are needed.

The National Academy of Sciences "Leopoldina" and the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) are supporting a symposium on the topic "The aging eye: unmet medical needs, societal implications and future therapeutic perspectives", which will take place on will take place on May 25 and 26, 2023, at the Center for Ophthalmology of the University Hospital of Cologne.

The symposium will start with an evening lecture for laypersons on the "Mystery of of Aging" at the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Aging. At Friday, May 26, 2023, in the lecture hall of the eye clinic, the focus will be on a full-day program on "unmet needs" in the field of vision research, systemic options for healthy aging and, finally, new therapeutic new therapeutic options for age-related diseases such as glaucoma, AMD and Glaucoma, AMD and presbyopia.

Numerous national and  international experts will speak. The organizers Univ.-Prof. Dr. Claus Cursiefen, Director of the Center for Ophthalmology at the Cologne University Hospital, and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Krieg, Vice President of the Leopoldina, are also pleased about the broad support for the topic and the symposium. and the symposium - among others by the CMMC and CECAD.
