Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne

Welcome to Katarzyna Bozek - new Junior Research Group Leader in the field of Artificial Intelligence

18/03/2020

Phenotyping of model organisms and diagnostics of cancer: K. Bozek's research aims are to establish methods and approaches allowing for broad, data scientific use of visual data in biology and medicine.

Katarzyna Bozek was awarded with the North-Rhine Westphalia funds junior group fellowships dedicated to the research in Artificial Intelligence for researchers returning to Germany from abroad. The NRW Ministry for Culture and Research provides funding (5 years) for the establishment of the Bozek  junior research group.

“I am extremely happy that the ideas about using new machine learning methods for quantification of visual information in biology has appealed to the committee of NRW Ministry for Culture and Research in July 2019” Bozek comments: "Considering the outstanding possibilities of multiple, close collaborations with partners from experimental and medical fields, I decided to join the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne at the University of Cologne".

The recent progress of both imaging and image analysis techniques are opening ways to elevate image data to a new scale in biological research. Whether in diagnostics of cancer or phenotyping of model organisms, Bozek's research aims are to establish methods and approaches allowing for broad, data scientific use of visual data in biology.

Strongly applied in biomedical research, Bozek and her team will search for ways in which computational and in particular machine learning methods can advance resolving specific medical and biological questions. The funding will help to expand the group and explore vast new scientific directions.

Bozek points out: “Since February 2020 I am involved in the establishment of my research group at the CMMC. And I am pleased to announce that our group received funding as a part of the e:Med Junior Research Consortia program of the BMBF. Together with two partners we will perform a systems level study of the Triple Negative Breast Cancer”.
